Now till Dec 31 - In store donations benefit Historic Germantown
We’re so pleased to announce our new in-store partnership with Historic Germantown. Just minutes from Center City, this establishment resides near significant moments in history, like where a battle in the Revolutionary War was fought, and where the first-ever written protest against American slavery was created. “Freedom’s Backyard,” indeed—their location encapsulates the sole mission behind Historic Germantown: to “protect, preserve, and share” the many remarkable historical homes, museums and landmarks right here in Philadelphia.
Through collaboration with the community and neighbors, this organization has successfully managed to create inclusive spaces to tell the stories of America’s past that deserve our time and recognition. From October 15th to December 31st, proceeds from all in-store donations will support Historic Germantown fund buses for their school field trip program, the Science Sleuths!
Ranging from Fairhill to Chestnut Hill, Historic Germantown administers twenty extraordinary attractions for its visitors: Aces Museum, Black Writers Museum, Ebenezer Maxwell Museum, Germantown White House, Historic RittenhouseTown, La Salle University Art Museum, The Colored Girls Museum, Allens Lane Art Center, Cliveden, Germantown Historical Society, Grumblethorpe, Hood Cemetery, Lest We Forget Slavery Museum, Wyck, Awbury Arboretum, Concord School House, Germantown Mennonite Historic Trust, Historic Fair Hill, Johnson House, and Stenton. Check out their website to read up on each attraction for further details on how to visit and what you’ll learn.
Their work just does not just stop here, though. From May to October, on the second Saturday of each month, free activities and tours are offered at these sites. The aforementioned Science Sleuths is a program created for middle schoolers in Philly. Students embark on field trips to these locations to get hands-on experience in learning history and the importance of inquiry, nature, and sustainability. They’re able to recognize early on that preservation and collaboration are necessary in maintaining a unified community.
The accuracy of the information delivered at these tours and field trips are ensured through Historic Germantown’s partnerships with various colleges, universities, and libraries. These collaborations reflect the real-life relationships created and nurtured through their organization. Together, they work to not only preserve and protect historical sites, but also amplify and empower the voices of those once severely underrepresented and undervalued in our history.
Historic Germantown’s work has been crucial to Philly’s cultural identity, economic progress, general education, and even social justice. Let’s give back to them this fall by picking out a site to visit, or simply donating with us!
